Women and elderly people are most vulnerable to problems cause by arthritis. People with flat feet are at high risk of arthritis. The reason behind this is, flat feet causes the pressure on knees as it alters the loading of the body’s weight all the way through the foot up through the leg and the knee. People with the genetic history of arthritis in their family are at risk. Other forms of risk are muscle weakness and obesity. Elderly patients are at risk to get Osteoarthritis.

What causes arthritis?

The causes for arthritis vary depending upon the type of arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system targets a person’s joint linings. Rheumatoid arthritis may be a combination of genetics and ecological causes. A wear and tear on joints causes Osteoarthritis. Combination of factors is cause behind majority of arthritis. These may include genetic composition, previous injury to bones, infections, overweight, and overuse of joints. Knee injury, as knee joint is not surrounded by a lot of soft tissue, even a torn ligament in the knee may prone to arthritis risk. Other causes to arthritis are cartilage is wearing, a lack of synovial fluid, and lack of immune system in your body, which further causes infection.

How does arthritis feel?

Arthritis may present in any joint. Most patients experience discomfort, pain, stiffness, and fatigue. In addition, the patient may be frustrated because they are no longer able to grip the things as before. Patient feels pain while doing certain activities like standing from a seated position or using stairs. Not being able to move the effected joint as usual and pain aches deep into the joint. Pain may not be noticeable in the morning, but it gets worse throughout the day. In case of rheumatoid arthritis, pain may ease at certain time, and then get significantly worse, rather than consistent pain and patient often feel tired and depressed.

What are the most common types of arthritis?

There are more than 100 types of arthritis are there. The most common types are Rheumatoid arthritis, Osteoarthritis and other types of arthritis include – Gout, infectious arthritis, juvenile arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Psoriatic arthritis, and Reactive arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the condition most commonly found in women. Osteoarthritis develops at certain parts, which are overused, and this is called primary osteoarthritis. Secondary osteoarthritis develops because of obesity, previous injury or hereditary. If the Osteoarthritis affects the knee the patient feels pain which worsens when walking up and down stairs or while rising from a seated position.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease i.e. the patient’s immune system mistakenly attack healthy joint tissue. This further causes to joint stiffness, pain and inflammation. If the patient neglects this type of arthritis it can cause permanent disfiguration and joint damage.

What are the symptoms of arthritis?

Symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, stiffness, fatigue, and swelling these symptoms can be mild or severe. The symptoms of pain and stiffness are normally caused by osteoarthritis. In some conditions, arthritis may cause problems in the patient’s eye, skin or other organs. In case of Rheumatoid arthritis patients body affects both sides and joints that are affected may be tender and it will appear as red and swollen. A patient suffering with flu-like symptoms such a weakness, fever, and nausea may be because of rheumatoid arthritis. Loss of energy and appetite may also appear in case of rheumatoid arthritis. Hard to heal injuries such as sprained ankle, which takes ages to heal. Numbness or tingling in the hands which gets worse during night time. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis sometimes experience locked joints in knees and elbows, this is because of swelling around the joint and this makes joint cannot bend.

Why do joints make popping and cracking noises?

Cracking or popping is caused by joint manipulation which will produce a cracking or popping sound. It is possible to crack hips, wrists, elbows, shoulders, ankles, knees, jaws, feet, sternum and the neck vertebrae. People believe that cracking of joints leads to arthritis but this misconception has not proved in medical research. There is medically proven theory behind this cracking noise but there are some suggested causes which produce this sound. This sound may occur when bubbles form in joints as they are pulled apart or rapid stretching of ligaments. The breaking of tendons or scar tissue over a prominence may also generate popping sound. Joints that are arthritic may crack and grind and these noises usually occur each time the joint is moved. This may be due to roughness at the joint surface which caused because of loss of the smooth cartilage.

What should I do if I think I have arthritis?

Many arthritis patients have misconception that doing exercise will make their condition worse, whereas in actual sense, physical activity reduces arthritis pain. It may be difficult for the patient to do the exercise but it is advised that regular exercise activity will reduces the pain and relieve joint stiffness, improve flexibility, decrease joint stress, build stronger muscles. To be more flexible take a warm shower before exercising. Exercise daily three times and wear supportive sports shoes with good cushioning. It is advised to avoid extreme neck movements in case the patient suffers from rheumatoid arthritis.

Do aquatic exercises in a heated pool and gentle stretch before you sleep. Make sure to stretch after physical activity to lengthen muscles and prevent soreness. Yoga also helps to improve flexibility and control over your body.
